Recently flushed my tranny and I'm going to replace the filter soon. Now, I'm starting to pull a tent trailer so I'd like to either change the existing tranny cooler for a bigger/newer one or add a second one. Any advice? Someone was telling me that the old Tranny coolers are prone to plugging. Anyone had an issue with this.

Also anyone have a good source for tranny coolers in Canada?

I have had good luck with the Hayden brand coolers, mounted inline with my stock coolers. Have them on both my Explorers and they cost about $40 USD. Have never heard of stock coolers getting plugged up.

I've been using Tru Cool brand coolers and have had very good luck with them.. If you have the room you can get some high BTU coolers. They have both .75" and 1.5" thick coolers.

would a second stock cooler from a wrecker work just as well? What't he best way to mount a second cooler?

Mount the secondary cooler either next to the primary cooler or above it. Don't mount it in front of the primary cooler. This will transfer heat from one cooler to the next, and reduce the level of cooling.

i saw someone just add a small cooler fan to there trans cooler had a temp comtrol and everything that is what i am going to do

It is not recommended to install a used cooler because you don't know what kind of gunk is in there. The stock design especially holds a lot of debris over time and if there is metal bits and gasket material stuck in the used cooler, it will probably break free and get into your transmission. New coolers are cheap enough it's not worth the risk.

On my Hayden coolers I simply used through-core connectors to install them in front of the radiator. Through-core connectors are like zip ties that go through the fins of your trans cooler and your radiator and sandwich them together with a bit of squishy foam in between. I mounted them on the passenger side of the truck, to the left of the stock trans cooler as you look at it, and hooked up the hoses inline so that the trans fluid passes through both coolers.

Okay, so if the stock design holds crap in it, wouldn't I be further ahead to replace the stock cooler with a larger newer one? Otherwise I'm running the risk of having the crap from the stock cooler gumming up the new one.

If you knew your trans was throwing crap or you just rebuilt the trans then yes, I'd replace the cooler..

As far as using a single big one or a couple smaller ones.. I think you will be able to fit more cooling capacity with 2 coolers than a single bigger cooler.

Here is a shot of the 2 coolers we have on our 1st gen. Its a very tight fit and the pusher fan actually pushes against the grille.

If your not going to use a pusher fan then you can fit a much bigger cooler into there.. I bet you could fit one of the Tru Cool 1.5" thick ones in there.

I'm gong to check what they got locally today before buying online.

Nothing wrong with that.. Check more than the local chain stores though.. If you have any speed shops, check them too.. That way you can get the most choices of stacked plate coolers..

Around here Hayden is the one you see in stores. We also see Permacools but pretty much only the tub/fin style which is usually less efficient than the stacked plate style.

We're pretty limited for what we have here. Found a Hayden Rapid cool but I'm looking at around $90 for it. Probably about the same if I bought it in the US and had it shipped here.

Is it possible to flush out old coolers?

Depends on what side of the border you're on...

Yes it's possible. Penetrants and degreasers with high pressure air/water can help. Tube and fin style coolers will be easier to clean out.
