Ok let me know if this sounds strange cause i thought it was. My 2002 4.0L xlt does not have a tranny dip stick. I have tried to take it to jiffy lube but they say they cant change it because its a sealed system only the dealer can. Whats the deal? is ford trying to screw me? or is there a way to diy

thanks

That transmission is a little bit different no it doesnt have a dipstick it has a plug in the pan. it is a plug inside of a bigger plug the center of the plug is how you would check the fluid and the outer is the draing one. to fill the transmission there is a hole in the right rear just above the pan in the transmission where you can fill. install the tran plug and remove the center part when it comes out the hole it is full. kinda of like a diff or a transfer case. good luck The only reason I can the that they said that you should take it to a dealer is because ford has a speacial tool to fill it through that hole in the plug but at ford we dont even use it because it such BS.

I have never seen one but this is the procedure I have gleaned from my readings. Basic procedure is to overfill transmission and let excess drain out. Form follows function. There will be a plug that allows complete drain out and another one that sets the high level. Filling becomes a little more complicated because you need to buy a hand or electric pump, but nothing tostop a die hard tinkerer. Bet one of those $9 boat bilge pumps would work. Haven't seen any pictures posted yet.

Drain the fluid out of the plug on the bottom of the pan. Unscrew the large plug to drain the fluid. This will only drain fluid in pan. Then reinstall large plug and remove the small center plug. You will have to push fluid in pan using a pump or trans filler plunger. After you get four quarts of fluid in the pan, start engine and bring trans temp up to 124 degrees. Add a little more fluid until you have a steady flow of fluid out of hole. Go through the gears and recheck in the same way. Reinstall the plug.
