'06 Explorer
Hello all, we have a '06 Explorer with 70K miles on it.We only occasionally tow a bass boat and the transmission shifts fine. I really dont want to drop the pan so I was thinking I could remove the drain plug while it's hot, let it drain and then reinstall the drain plug and refill it through the level check plug with a pump untill fluid just drips out of the check plug hole. I have been told however that there is a fill plug on the rear left side of the tranny.

Does anyone have any comments or suggestions?

Thanks!

I think there is a level check plug on the side or top of the transmission, but I don't know exactly where it is. Look on the transmission forum on this site and I'm sure you'll find the answer. I know there is a thread or two with diagrams of the different transmissions.

Thanks! I did see the tag and its a 6L2P-7000 EB.

A family friend owns a transmission shop and I was discussing the explorer with him. I told him how I was a little baffled because I was told it's "sealed" tranny and that's why there's no dipstick. He said basically that the transmission on the explorers suck and they suck to work on. He said definitely have the fluid changed around 50,000 and to have it done professionally. This wasn't a ploy to have me give him the business either because he only charges me for materials. Just thought I'd pass on the word.

If you would like a .pdf of the shop manual discussing the transmission let me know.

Yeah, I don't love my transmission, but they aren't that tough to work on. To swap all the fluid, all you have to do is disconnect the return line from the tranny cooler. You will need the Ford disconnect tool to do this. Or you can cut the line and install an inline filter when you're done. Cycle out a quart or so at a time with the ignition key and every time you do this, pump the same amount in the fill plug. Do this until you are satisfied all the fluid is replaced. Have about 16 quarts on hand. There are threads on how to do this on the transmission forum, and also on the BITOG site.
