Is your 96 a V8? I ask because you mentioned shudder, and if you have the V8 that means you have the 4R70W trans, which is known to shudder.

There is a TSB updating all 4R70W trannys to Mercon V fluid, which helps eliminate shudder.

I flush and use synthetic ATF as a preventitive measure; never had any tranny problems.
 






I would just change the filter. You are changing about 1/3 of the fluid doing that and its much cheaper. The filter change is something you would/should do if you get a flush anyway. In my experiance if a filter change doesnt help a flush isnt gonna help either.
While you have the pan off install a drain plug and it will make the next change much eaiser or at least less messy.
On a veh. that age you should be doing a filter change one a year. Cheap tranny insurance....
 






I flushed the old fluid and the shudder is gone. It's only been a couple days though.
