Tranny flush vs. Dropping pan

With an external filter, every time you change the filter, you change a quart of ATF . It also adds a quart to the system.

just out of curiousity, whered you mount the external filter? and whered you get the kit?

One thing about changing all the fluid, especially on an older and partially worn tranny.

As your clutchpacks wear, they leave fibers in the fluid. As the clutchpacks get close to failure, any suspended fibers can actually keep the tranny "alive" for longer before it needs a rebuild.

I still recommend changing all the fluid, just wanted to explain why sometimes a tranny will fail soon after a flush. It's a chance you take. However, when you drop the pan to change the filter before the flush, you can inspect these components and replace them as needed.

Take a look at Hank's thread at Dead Link Removed for your answer.

I would have a question for your "tranny expert". The first time I changed my fluid, all I did was a filter change and replaced the four quarts of fluid that came out with four new quarts. I did this at 50K miles per Ford's Severe Duty schedule in my '97 Owner's Service Guide. The second time I changed the fluid, I did it 30K miles later. After I replaced the filter and poored four new quarts in, I did a complete flush through my transmisison cooler line. It took adding 15 additional quarts of new fluid before the fluid coming out looked almost as good as the new fluid I was pooring in. The first few quarts were almost as black as used motor oil. Now for my question to your "tranny expert": if all of the contaminates stick to the inside of the tranny and don't get suspended in the fluid, what was all of the black crap that was in my fluid? I'm going to stick to the filter and complete flush every 30K miles since my last fluid change.

Thanks for everyone's input. I got the pan dropped and he said it looked good not much metal shavings on the magnet and no signs of clutch fibers. I will take it down to another place and have it flushed. Thanks again! It does shift a smother now. So I know it did help a little.

$95. I also had him install the newer filter like Opera House suggested.
