Trying to move this from the Stock 1995-2001 forum, but had to cut and paste. Hoping I can delete from the other forum.
Totally frustrated and pretty ticked off at this point. My 2000 Explorer, with a 5R55E tranny had the check engine light come on just out of the blue in October. NO blinking OD light. Of course, I didn’t run right out and get the code read on it and a week later, I had no R or D, but had 2 and 1. Got it home and it hasn't been driven since. Finally, did a ton of research, thought the easiest route to try would be to put some of that Lucas stuff in it. So I pulled out a quart of yucky brown fluid and put the Lucas in. No luck. So before my husband (who can do anything when it comes to building a home, auto mechanics, not so much), would touch it, he wanted a mechanic (by trade) friend to come look at it and pull the codes. He came over Saturday and it came up with P0713, which I found is the Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor Circuit High Input, late Monday night.
However, since our friend is a mechanic, we went with what he said to do. Now keep in mind, this friend, that we’ve known for 15+ years, was not going to be doing any work for us what so ever, so he was not going to benefit from telling us something wrong. He advised us to pull the pan, drain, replace the filter, gasket and fluid. We “could be throwing away $40 to find out it didn’t work, or it would fix it.” We asked him if we should do the valve body gaskets and he said no, that it would do no good to even pull it and look at them. Okay! Cool!
So Monday, I start to tear it apart, got frustrated because certain body parts were keeping me from getting where I needed to be under the truck, lol. And no, I’m not excessively over weight. ;-) I was told that the truck had to remain level, so jacking it up or using ramps was out of the question. Hubby goes out and zips right through it. Got it drained, put it back together and all that good stuff. Test drive it around… and it’s doing the same damn thing! Hubby tells me that we have 2 options….run it over the scale and get cash for it, send it to “pick a part” or try and trade it in. I’m of course beyond upset, this is my truck, I really love my truck and I know the true facts of our life, it’ll be 6 months to a year, before I’ll have something new to drive.
I’m refusing to give up, so I started doing more research. Since we have a clear title, I’m thinking that there may be a local mechanic that will put a rebuilt tranny in it and let me pay them off, provided they have the title or a lien on it. Or the original problem wasn’t address correctly the first time. Which I believe it the total problem, based on what the code said.
Where is this TFT sensor circuit? Can it be accessed without having to drop the pan and fluid again? What is the part number? Does it have to be ordered through Ford? Valve body gaskets, IMO should have been done, since we were there anyway and they probably haven’t been touched or looked at since the 1st rebuilt tranny was put in it in 2010.
I hope that I’ve given y’all enough information and that y’all can offer a girl some advice. I’m sure that someone has dealt with this issue, at least once.
Thanks y’all, I’m trying. I'm willing to learn and not afraid to do it myself, if I have to, as long as I can fit under the truck. lol
