ok so here goes the story. last night at midnight i went to walmart after work, as i was about to park i was going down the lot in second gear and i started to turn and i heard a thumping/clanking noise. well i quickly pushed in clutch and parked. after shopping went home to problem. as i got home i smelled something. smelled like CO2 actaully lol anyway opened the hood and seen smoke. got under neath and the tranny was leaking onthe the exhuast. being 1am now it was kinda hard to see but it looks like its leaking from the gasket at the front of the tranny. havent checked the tranny fluid yet b/c its raining. anyone have thoughts on what it would be. about how much to have it fixed. what about that clanking noise lol what would that have been and did i kill the tranny? any help is appreciated. no bodys open today b/c 4th. thanks

Does it make a clanking noise while the engine is just at idle without any movement? Maybe the fluid was burning off of the exhaust, and made a popping sound from the heat of the exhaust coming in contact with the fluid? Do you have ramps? Put your vehicle on ramps, wipe everything dry, then start it again to see where the leak might be coming from.

no ramps, was actaully going to buy some last night, thast y i went to walmart, thought it would make it easier to put my new gibson on lol. thought i best save my money. no the clank was just that one time, i could feel it in the stick also.

It might have been felt from a low fluid level. The manual transmission has metal gears that have fluid around them all of the time. Don't drive without fluid. Check the fluid level. There is a plug underneath for checking the level. Unfortunately, you would still need ramps to get underneath to check it.

well i can barley fit under there with creeper lol. last night i just layed on the ground no prob untill i found out i parked over about 1 million ants lol. and now it raining lol. ill get under there on cardboard i guess and check it now
let ya know in a few.

ok i got the top FILL plug out and it starting coming out so it obviosly full. blacker than hell tho. 113k miles last guy pry never changed it. i gtg for now tho let me know what ya think

well i had to drive it to wirk today. took it very easy easy. no more than 20mph and nothing above 2000 rpm. got out after the 1 mile ride home and all u could smell is the burned tranny fluid. since the tranny is full on fluid what the hell would that cluncking be lol its driving me crazy and has me paranoid that the tranny will need to be replaced lol

What kind of fluid are you using? You said the fluid was black, perhaps it is time to change it, maybe you will find some metal chunks in the oil.

havent changed the tranny oil yet, guessing it whats has been in there since it was new.took it too the ford garage and they said the tranny was leaking aound the seal but since its not leaving a puddle its nothing to worry about yet. he said the real problem is the right front axle seal it was obviosly thrwoing gear oil onto the exhaust guess i have two problems lol. well alteast they threw on my new gibson, cant wait to hear it lol.

Similar Problem

I have a 1997 automatic SOHC 4.0. It has been sitting for two days and is leaking fluid onto the exhaust from the pan. Hard to see but I think it is coming from one of the bolts but maybe it is the seal. Fluid is bright and dosen't smell. If I figure it out I will let you know. I am getting a clunking noise when going into reverse.

funny thing is it only clunked the one time. and it turns out the tranny is leaking from the seal but since its not leaving a puddle the garage said its nothing to reaplce now b/c have to drop the tranny. like i said above turns out i had 2 problems and the right front axle seal it what was throwing the oil on the exhaust. would something in front axle make it clunk one time? i take it wednesday to get it fixed also getting new vlave covers (one i have now have holes in them lol.) good luck with yours. it will pry be expensvie lol
