I have leaked all of the fluid out of my transmission. Crap. Ok. After one day i tried climbing this hill, i bottomed out and didnt make it. I then noticed a huge puddle of tranny fluid when i was idleing. It stopped leaking after about a day. Still had fluid too. So ok. Now everytime i go out in the woods i leak. Usually after i floor it through a mud hole or do drifts in the sand. It leaks for a bit then stops. For the most part. Though my reverse gear makes a whine and wont go anywhere for a while after i leak. I think its because of the low fluid but im not sure why its leaking. Front seal? Comes from here.

Another thing is i shut it off today and when i started it back up it ran really really rough. Then got better. Though that might be lack of fluid too.

I'd second it as likely being the front seal.

Thats what i was figuring after looking around on here. It is possible to fix myself correct? how hard do you think it will be?

Could it possibly be the tranny overheating and pushing the fluid out of the vent? My coolant resevoir is dry. Ill add some antifreeze to it till it stops sipping it up and see if that helps.

A low coolant condition in the radiator could cause similar problems since the radiator shares the cooling lines for the transmission in a separate section. Coolant flows around the integrated transmission cooler. You could add an external transmission cooler in front of the radiator in addition to the existing one in the radiator.

Alright. Ill look into it. Thanks for your help man. I appreciate it.

Ok update. Put about a quart in and i think its back to level ish. I cant really tell. Theres no definite cutoff line on the dipstick. But a small trail that goes up into the cross hatches so i guess thats good. gunna check in auto tomorrow. I took it for a test drive and it didnt leak and didnt miss 3rd. But it still takes another 10 mph to shift into second when it starts up, then it goes away. My reverse worked at the beggining and then when i parked after about a 5-7 min. drive it whined and shuttered when i shifted into reverse. Though still went backwards. Just slower. And the shifts are a bit rough. Idk. Im gunna take it to auto shop in school tomorrow and see if my teacher can help out a bit. Hopefully i can fix this.

Ok my trans is shifting better but still kind of delayed a bit inbetween shifts. And i put it in reverse after driving for a bit and it makes a loud whine and wont go anywhere. If it does manage to go it moves slow and shutter like crazy. Could it be the Clutch not engaging?

ok. Didnt get a chance to drop the pan today. But got a chance to see that my explorer wont engage fully when starting off from a stop. It revs up to 3k ish and goes extremely slow Until it picks up eventually, Then it started leaking fluid again when i parked. I figure its toast. So ill still check the bands and then if there bad im going to go 50/50 with my friend on a cheap X to get the trans out and part the rest. Who knows maybe ill get a rear end with higher gears. Which i need. And a good trans and make the money back on the parts we sell.

hmm. Now reverse is fine. Better then ever. Though i give it gas and i definetly have a major loss in power. Almost like i would be starting in 2nd or 3rd gear if i was driving stick. Like i rev up to 2 or 3k and pull out slowly.
