tranny not shifting right

when i first start my truck and i put it into drive it wont ever shift out of first gear. i have to manually shift it into second and then when i go back to drive(hoping for a shift into 3rd) it just drops back into first and my engine almost instantly redlines. after about 10min of this it will start to shift on its own. but when i come to a stop it wont go into 1st gear, it will start off in second and then after about 20feet it will abrubtly shift into 1st. i checked my fluid and it seems fine. i am about due for a tranny service(every 20k miles). has anybody else had this problem before? i hopin its just the vacuum modulator gone bad or somethin. but maybe after 310k miles, my tranny is just a goner

wow 310k miles? on the original tranny?.....probably just time for a new one.......

Yep, I think its tranny time. Dont worry though, 310,000 miles is amazing life for one of those. I'd go the fully rebuilt-installed or new-installed route to having yours rebuilt. Shop for the best warranty too. I had mine done for about $2300 at Ford but their warranty is only 12m/12K so I probably wouldnt do that again.
