Well, I thinki my tranny just went out. I was attempting to back into my driveway, only it would not go in reverse. So I tried to go forward, to no avail. I ended up pushing it to the curb in front of my house. Bummer. At any rate, Does anyone know of good aftermarket tranny rebuild kits, or a better tranny that would bolt right up to the borg warner transfer case, or any other aftermarket support? This is my daily driver for the time being, so I need to do something pretty quick. How much is the stock tranny going to cost me to replace?

Not much hope

Mine is still hang-n in there, but I know that there is no adapters for the A4LD. There is an adpter for a T5 manual. Expect to pay $1300-$1500 for a replacement. Let us know if you find any better alternitives.

I would start off by checking your fluid. If the fluid is too low it won't go into a gear at all. What did your truck not do instead of going into gear??? How long did you try the gears???

If that's not it there are a few aftermarket tranny around but I think most are from the south somewhere. They're end up running about 1500+or-. If you can find an aftermarket go with that....not fords.

Good Luck.

This morning I went to crank it up and drive it around the block to see if the gears would work after a little rest. It is going into gear now, but not like it had in the past. It used to kind of lurch when I put it in reverse, and like wise whenever it changed into any other gear. In other words, I could definitely feel whenever it changed gears. Now though, the only way I can tell that the gears have changed is by watching the tach, or seeing my reverse lights go on. Very weird if you ask me. So I guess I'll ride it till it goes out again. BTW, where do you fill the transmission fluid, through the dipstick hole?

Leebo - To answer your questions, instead of going into gear, it just rolled down the driveway and into the middle of the street, like it was in neutral or something. I tried the gears for a couple minutes, then got out and pushed to where it wouldn't be in the middle of the road.

I think I read somewhere recently, in another post, probably, that someone was on their fourth transmission, and their truck only had 85k on it. Well, this is the original tranny, and I just went over 180k this last week. That's pretty good, I think.

The A4LD is a piece of $hit. I've been through about 6 in my 91 130,000 miles. If it goes again it's time for the T-5. Sometimes mine won't go into gear either but only if it's real cold of someting. I just rev it a few times and it pickes up the gear. I wonder that the t-5 conversion would cost? Robbie

Its more of a crapshoot than anything.. At 215k miles we are on our 2nd tranny (first died at 165k).. I've seen some of the high mileage explorers (300k miles or so) listed with 2 or 3 trannies.. but I've seen some low mileage trannies (150k or so) on their 3rd or 4th tranny..

It also depends on your tranny rebuild.. If you rebuild a poor tranny poorly it isn't gonna last.. but most tranny places offer a 30k mile waranty or higher on trannies so if you keep it clean and cool they really should last a while. If you really beat it up fourwheeling a good manual may be worth it since the a4ld is really a light duty tranny.

If you do decide to get it rebuilt find a place that knows the a4ld.. most big tranny shops don't do many of them or don't know how to do them right..
