I found this on the Do It Yourself Network site: Dead Link Removed. They do the how-to using a 1999 Explorer (like mine).

I wouldn't use gasket adhesive

on a transmision pan. If you need to hold the gasket in place use petroleum jelly. You don't need that stuff gumming up the spools! If you lay out the pan gasket a day ahead it will be flat and stay in place. I've never seen an article before that mentioned using any adhesive or sealer before.
 






NO gasket sealer.

Just to reinforce Operas point- do not use adhesive on the gasket- petroleum jelly if you need something to "stick" it with is what my FSM calls for with any gaskets related to the transmission.
 






Yeah, I thought that was strange that they said that. I have seen on this forum NUMEROUS times not to use adhesive-type stuff.
