So, what exactly is shudder, and what causes it?

This weekend we drove my wifes truck and it ran just fine. THis morning she gets up to go to work and comes back in saying it vibrates. So I take it for a spin around the block. Starts up fine, reverses fine, idles fine when in D, but when driving it has a bad shudder when accelerating between like 10-20 mph. I told her it was prob the tranny and it will be ok for awhile, but needs service. When she got to work (and it warmed up), she said it wasn't as bad. The tranny has been flushed and new fluid about 20K ago, but the pan was not dropped or filter changed. I have noticed a mild shudder type feeling before, but was usually during low RPM in a higher gear, like it was trying to shift. I may drop the pan, change the filter and check for loose stuff just to feel better.

Are there any soft parts that I should replace that may aid the prob? Maybe that double lip solenoid seal?

Sounds like an ignition problem

And soft parts are hard to get to!

Just the man I wanted to hear from, but not what I wanted to hear.

I read you had the same symptoms before and it turned out to be a fouling plug under load. I was planning on changing the the plugs, it's' been 35-40K on non-platinum champions. I just don't understand why it would only act this way under acceleration in 1st. When she gets home, I'll do a little more investigation and see what it does at highway speed.

Thats funny.
Drove it tonight and it ran fine, all the way up to 85. Only one time did it feel a little odd. When getting on the on ramp and accelerating it seemed to slip a little from 2-3, I think, maybe 3-OD. It drove fine the rest of the time, even under hard acceleration from a stop. I'll just keep an eye on it.

I'm still changing those plugs though.

I would do the tranny filter first. You MAY prevent further shudder problems but your filter DOES need to be changed if you havent done it after a flush.

Shudder can indicate a failing sprag gear in the planetary.

I've had that problem on my 97

And just moving the wires a little where they bunch up together made it go away. I can be so lazy sometimes. Pulling ignition wires is such a pain.
