Ok first I will say hello because I think this is one of my first posts.

I have a 97 4x4 4.0L ohv, the problem is when I am driving (acceleration and constant speed) the trany shutters like its going in and out of O/D. But the thing is it does this in every gear. I change fluid and filter to try and fix with no change. I read here many things effect the trans like the alt. the coolent temp sensor the electric solinoids in it the valve body but not to sure where to start here. I also unpluged the CTS at thermostate housing and reset comp. with no change??

HELP! just bought truck and wife thinks I made a huge mistake tell me it does not need a new trans! please!

thanks

justin

I had a similiar problem on a 98 XLT with the auto, 4 high, 4 low selector. Does yours have that or is it 2h, 4h, 4l? Point is, mine would shudder under light load on overdrive to downshift and I replaced transfer case, all sensors to the Transfer case etc and no fix. Turns out I had two different sets of tires, Michelins on front and Uniroyal on back. Both same tire size, but just enough of a manufactuers difference to throw the GEM and cause it to shudder and try to engage 4h in auto mode. 4 new tires from same manuf. and problem gone. So simple but I threw $2k at it trying to fix it. Check for the unobvious. Hope this helps,

98 XLT Dead Tranny today :)

This transmission programs in a little slip.. I want to ask, did you use Mercon V fluid? Use of Mercon III will cause your symptoms. How many miles on your tranny?

If your answer is that you used Mercon V in the fluid change, then guess what? Good call Toy. The odds on bets are TCC or even the EPC.... If you go read the 5R55E Valve body rebuild diary you will have a pretty good idea. The chief cause of shudder is the torque convertor clutch (tcc). The Torque convertor itself "could" be the problem, but a better chance is the other causes above. Fix it soon. We're here to help you.

ok I think I did use III but It did it before I did the change.

Oh and I just came from the shop from where I bought it cause it needed a wheel bearing for safety (something with ABS acting weird at the last 2km/h of braking) he did not bother changing the bearing when he found out the sensor was atached. He just decided to pull the 10amp fuse in dash and some diode under hood. I put these back in and reset comp and still nothing..

how bad is it to drive like this and how bad is it if I do have III.
I can change fluid easy, because when I had the pan down I put a drain in the pan for easy maintience.
I thought the 4.0L OHV did not come with the 5 speed 5r55e trans?

Are we discussing your 93 as stated in your Avitar (which is an A4LD and uses Mercon III, or are we discussing the 97? The 97 is the 5R55E and uses Mercon V, NOT III. IF we are talking the 97 and if yoou DID use Mercon III, any transmission supply house or good tranny shop can sell you an additive that modifies the III to act like V. Add that and you shuld be good.

The 97

I have read the diary and see which is the TCC solinoid and when I was in the trans I touched all solinods and the one was loose I could turn it in its socket? good or bad?

The solenoids are a sliding fit into the bores and they will turn pretty easily. I'm still wondering, what fluid do you have in this transmission? III or V ?

MERC III, but I thought I have the 4 speed? and the manual says MERC III for it??? How do I tell which one I have?

yours is a 97 only the 95-96 used the 4rs 97-03 i believe used the 5rs do like glacier
said and get the additive or change it

what should I do about the shutter it did it before the fluid change so I am guessing its not bing caused by the merc III..

I drove the truck today and when fully warmed up and driven very easy (feather the pedal) it will not shutter.

when I drive under load (heavy head-on wind) it does it quite a bit.

if you have a multimeter check the resistance on the tcc solenoid you can also take it off and apply direct battery current to it pos and ground you should hear a click
if the resistance is good and you hear a click then the solenoid is probably good
i believe the resistance should be between 8.9 and 16 ohms.
hope this may help

Well, I fixed the shudder problem and you would not believe what it was. Mechanic at dealership that I bought it at keep saying it was tranny related. But I looked at the plug wires and they were original (200000kms), fuel filter original, and YES plugs were original!! wow! I can't belive it still ran. Plugs at to be gapped .052-.056" but they were .090" across the board. So my theory is the compression stroke was blowing out spark! Crazy, but I have heard of this before. Anyways runs mint now and it's smooth sailing. Moral of the story is do your tune-ups.!
