I've got a '92 Navajo with a 5-speed gearbox and would like to put an automatic in it. Which transmission should I look for and will there be any complications regarding this swap i.e. linkage, crossmember, driveshaft length, etc?
Thanks, Jeff

Welcome to this forum! You have several options. The first one would be the A4LD which was the default option. You will need a new computer, wiring harness, and shifter. The next option would be a 700R4 with adapters. There is a sticky thread about swapping a 5R55S with a controller in the transmission section.

i just did this on my 96,if you use the a4ld and wire the lockup and od solenoid you will not need to switch computers.its not that difficult once you have an older wiring diagram from whatever year a4ld you use.but if you can just get a package deal from someone comp, trans, driveline, wiring harness, column, shift linkage, you may want to just spend the time swapping instead of wiring if your not comfortable with it.

I would strongly advise against doing so. You're sacrificing a lot of reliability, as well as some gas mileage and power.

I went from the POS Mazda 5 speed to the POS A4LD years ago
I did it right, using all factory parts and the auto computer.
I used the factory 3 position clutch switch bypass. I used 1988 Ranger pedal assembly for an auto, I used the floor shifter from a 86 BII automatic, I used the computer from a 93 Explorer A4LD (I had a 93 4.0L engine) and I used the factory A4LD wiring
I retained my 1254 t case and driveshafts.
I did the conversion over a 3 day weekend, I had to run three additional wires from trans to computer
I used an automatic radiator with trans cooler and an aftermarket trans cooler in series with the radiator

Not worth it IMO, I went through 3 A4LD transmissions and that is in a 3600# BII not a 4600# 4 door Explorer

I would seriously consider using a C4 auto if you can live without overdrive

the 700R4 is $$$$$$

My Navajo is 2WD. The overdrive with a 700R4 does sound nice for gas mileage. And I would rather keep the shifter on the floor rather than moving it to the column.
