You need Dexron/Mercon type ATF fluid. The transfer case should be the same. It will say what type in your owners manual.

Oh yeah, most people here swear by synthetic fluid. Iwould suggest searching this site for the different opinions on which brand is the best.

Take a look at AMSOIL synthetic. I read everywhere that AMSOIL is the best on the market. A member, AGExplorer, Sells the AMSOIL. you can contact him through E-mail or PM

Bt all means go synthetic.

Good luck.....

thanks for your posts

im putting the tranny in tomarrow, i put it off since i cut my finger almost completyely off. ill let you know how it goes.

I currently have 169,000 miles on my '92 Explorer 4 Door 4.0L Manual. I have learned greatly from this site and would like to thank all posters for providing me with the knowledge and confidence to work on my Explorer -- I can no longer afford the dealer's labor and parts charges -- and too often, unfortunately, poor repair work. Hopefully I can repay in kind with some of my own postings.
-------------------

I want to replace the 3 plugs on the upper side of the tranny housing BFSGH (BeFore Somebody Gets Hurt -- meaning my pocket book). I have read several horror stories about trashing the tranny because these plugs dried up and went AWOL. I was able to reach up and locate those little devils; they seem to be intact, and seem to be made out of plastic rather than rubber. I went to Ford to get their replacement plugs, which, it turns out, are now metal. The part # for the Ford plug is 99305-1800, description PLUG. This plug is about the size of a dime with a thickness a little less than that of a nickle. The plug is concave on one side and convex on the other side. The Ford parts person says that you place the plug in the hole concave side first, and then you wack the convex side to cause the plug to flatten and expand within the hole.

I have yet to take off the tranny cover so I am not sure whether this is going to be difficult or not; I fear wacking the plug all the way into the hole and losing it to the tranny housing -- I guess if this happens I can simply retrieve the plug at my next oil change by cleaning what's left of it off of the magnetic drain plug (jk).

I know this is rather long (sorry) so to the point. I have read the following on this site regarding replacement parts for these plugs:

"The part numbers for the metal plugs are Dana #219-3052 or Dorman #555-108 and as was mentioned you need three plugs to do the job."

I thought these were Ford part numbers, showed them to the Ford guy and he said that there were not.

Questions:
1) where can I get either the Dana or Dorman parts?

2) are they basically the same shape as the Ford part that I described above?

3) are my fears unfounded regarding accidently pushing the plug into the tranny?

4) any advice?

Thanks
Colin

I can almost garentee unless your the first owner of that X you have them already replaced.

I got the tranny in there now, AAMCO told me if i were to use stnthetic it would void/null said warrenty. 12 month one year. THey told me to use 10w40 motor oil is this right? Im only doing it cause i need the warrenty. And they said using synthetic this early on a rebuild makes it wear funny. Let me know what you guys think about this.

I posted this message twice; most of the replies were received on the other thread. Here is the link to that thread.

I am the original owner and the old plastic/rubber plugs are still there and intact. I have changed all of my fluids over to synthetic. Mobil 1 10W-30 for the motor (will change to 5W-30 on next oil change), Amsoil Universal transmission fluid for the manual transmission and transfer case, Amsoil 75W-145 synthetic for the front and rear differentials (did not need to ad any friction additive to the rear diff when using Amsoil, but you can if you want -- see the Amsoil website for detailed information about their oils, and for ordering). Everything is working great and it has been about 2000 miles.

I don't think that using 10W-40 motor oil in the trans is recommended. My user manual calls for Dexron III (sp?) -- Amsoil Universal ATF meets Dexron III specifications and more.

I would ask AAMCO why they are recommending something different than that specified by the users manual. You may want to check the answers to my previous oil queries on this site, at the following link:

Hope this helps.
