Ok, I just bought a 1997 X with 122,000 miles. Its a 4x4 with a 4.o SOHC. Today, after engaging 4x4 high and low, I noticed a shaking in my tranny. It happened in reverse as well as low gears while riding down the road. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be going wrong. I am taking it in for service at the Ford delearship on Monday. Thnaks.

How do you know the tranny was shaking? Could just be a bad u-joint.

It never was shaking until I put it in reverse that one time, and when I was driving it around after that. But I let it sit, and it stopped. So i guessed that it was the transmission. Not sure though

VB gasket

Those trannys have a valve body gasket problem, could be the VB is loose or the gasket is missing part or torn. Do a search for 97 trans or valve body gaskets here and you should get some hits which may help. I believe Ford has an upgraded gasket out for those years.

Sure it wasn't just axle windup from running 4x4 on the pavement/road?? That is as NO NO in case you didn't know.......
