After a long 6 hour car trip into Vt, i noticed that there was a loud clocking sound when i was in any gear accept 4th gear. The sound starts off as a soft clicking, or knocking sound, but than gets greater the faster i go. One of my friend had said it might be a barring, or a chipped touth, He was thrown off by the fact that it didnt make the sound in 4th gear. It is a 91 5 speed, with 186,000 miles on it, and the original transmission.... Anyone know waht the problem might be?

IS the noise still there when you push the clutch in or does it go away?

What makes you think it's the tranny and not a driveshaft or something?

When i push the clutch in the noise is not there anymore. I think it is the tranny becasue that is where the sound sounds like it is coming from, it may be something else, but im not sure yet.

SOunds like it;s time for a new clutch, tranny is probably fine. You probably either broke a spring in the driven disc (common) or bent a spring in the pressure plate (also common). Try looking through the inspection cover with a flashlight while a friend depresses the clutch pedal, be careful with the truck running and you under it.

You might be able to see whats happening before dropping the tranny, but I would plan on replacing the clutck packand having the flywheel resurfaced, I put 4 clutches in my truck in 2 years, I can do it in about 5 hours bymyself with hand tools if thattells you anything. If you do it yourself it cost about $200-300 with a new slave cylinder. I would use a dual friction clutch and ALWAYS replace the slave cylinder when the tranny is down.

This is why I finally coverted my truck to an auto....

I will check into that, but does that scenerio make sence, because the sound is there in every gear accept fourth, that is why i thought it might be in the gear box, or have to do with the transmission. Odviously i do not know much about cars, but i am just trying to make sure i know exactly what it is. I am going to take it to seea mechanic mid week, but i wanted to know what it was bwfore than so see if i could fix it myself.
Thanks
-Vic
