Auto tranny or manual?

It should still be a A4LD.. Bronco II, 91-94 Explorer, Ranger, Aerostar..

What engine?

up to 94 A4LD from 2.9 or 4.0L Ranger or 4.0L Explorer will bolt in as long as they are from a 4x4

You could go a step further and get the OHV 4.0L

If I was to use one from an explorer does all the wiring work and links?

I would like to update to a 4.0 L how much more work is it?

89-94 A4LD transmission is the same behind the 2.9L or 4.0L
PHYSICALLY

However they are not as strong internally in the earlier years, putting a 89 trans in a 92 truck is working backwards, I personally would use the lowest mileage and latest year trans I could find, or consider a rebuild (A GOOD REBUILD, do some research on this forum for the dreaded a4ld)

putting a 94 explorer a4ld in your 92 Ranger is a bolt in deal, your wiring remains.
The A4ld only has a few wires and a kick down cable.

the 4.0L is a bit more work, and some wiring.
You need to do some research, these topics are covered in detail over and over on this forum.

One last question..
So a 90-94 explorer 4x4 4.0 Litre engine will work with a 2.9 Litre 4x4 1992 ranger Auto
