I got a Summit Catalog in the mail and I know that I want to get one sometime soon, but I've been trying to follow what other board members have done since they seem to know what fits and what doesn't. I found that the most popular auxiliary cooler is the B&M SuperCooler. I have found a few different sizes and I also found one that has a fan attached to it. My question is, would it be worth the extra money ($150) to get the one w/ the fan or should I just get one of the standard coolers. Would it even fit? Also if you recommend a standard cooler, what size fits the front of the Explorer? I have a 99 Sport w/ 4x4 SOHC & 5r55e.

It's not necessarily the name brand of cooler, it's the type. There are two types one is a tube style cooler, and then the stacked plate style. I actually have two stacked plate coolers and an external filter mounted in the front of my AC condenser so with some creativity you can get a pretty good size cooler in there, but ultimately you need to measure to see where it can fit and how big of one you can fit, I think mine are both 12 (or 14) by 9 inches.

If you are going to mount the cooler in from of the radiator, where the engine fan will draw air through the cooler then an extra cooling fan is not necessary. However it will help in the cooling of the tranny if you find you still need some additional airflow. Keep in mind that a cooling fan can also block airflow when it is not running, so it is a trade off. If you are not mounting it in front of the radiator (like on the frame rail or someplace) then a fan is required so air will pass over the cooler.

Something else you should really consider is getting a temp gauge hooked into the output line on the tranny so you know how warm you are actually running.

anyway just food for thought....

Thanks for the info, I was looking at the plate and fin design from B&M, it's at least a cheaper model than the one with the fan. I think I could afford that soon and it shouldn't be too hard to install. I most likely will just mount it up front like Aldive and some of the others did. I'd also like to end up with the electric fan too, but that's for another day. Thanks again for the help.

By all means go with a stacked plate type cooler. I use one from B & M and it has performed flawlessly.

I ordered ( from Jegs ) the one with a built in fan and it would not fit on my '99 SOHC. Jegs took it back with no problems.

If it will fit, by all means go with a fan mounted one.

Good luck ....
