96 Ford exploder!
Ok so i just got this explorer two months ago from my girls dad. It is a 96 4.0 2wd auto with 220k on it now. So enterprise was the first owner till about 30k then her dad got it and drove it to about 220k and then I pick it up from him in great shape minus a few minor things. I just drive the Exp to work and back about 10-20 miles per day.

So last night backing out of the drive way i noticed the trans would go and lock up go and lock up. I finally got out of the driveway and it rode fine in drive. I have a transmission guy local that does all my work, but im trying to decided if i can fix it or if it really is a trans problem. Thanks for the help also while i am asking. The explorer has a new rack and pinnion ball joints and controol arms, and I just replaced the sway bar end links. driving down the road though the car makes a clunking or rattling noise in the front end at times! any clues of what to look for would be great. Its not constant and sometime does it when braking!

Thanks for the help!

Well I talked with a few local places! One shop told me that a servo or something could be grabing the belt and not releasing. Which is what it feels like because when you put it in reverse it goes a few inches then locks up and leaves a nasty skid mark. The other shop told me just becasuse the reverse is out that it needs a complete over haul is this even make sense? Does any one know the average price of a over haul?

Check the rear diff before you pull the trans.
The clunk or rattle in the front could be torsion bar pads. Common in your year.
