Ok, my trans needs to be serviced and I think I will be doing this, I have done other cars but never an Explorer. Any hints or problems I may run into?
I am thinking that I should put in Syn. but if I do the service I cant get all of the fluid out so would it be worth it to put in syn and then have a blend? Or have a shop do it and get ALL of the old fluid out?
Also, who makes a top quality filter?
Thanks so much guys,

I'll be watching this posting. I'm planning to change the trans fluid myself. Reading the Haynes Repair manual seems easy enough. I have the same problem Dead Link Removed what fluid to use - syn? What filte? I'm planning to buy it from the dealer. Is there any performance filter for the trans?

DO NOT use synthetic tranny fluid unless Ford recommends it for your tranny. It WILL cause you problems. The A4LD's do not recommend synthetic. My understanding is that the newer 4R44E and 5R55E my recommend its use.

The reason it is not a good idea on the A4LD is the clutch material used. This comes directly from my Ford tranny expert.

As far as getting all the fluid out, it really is not necessary unless you are having problems. To do that, you would need to remove the converter and drain it. This is not easy. Otherwise, just drain the pan, and change the filter...... that will do just fine.

hey nick,
just did mine a few months back, no real problems other than it is a pretty messy job. to drain the pan you kinda get fluid all over but other than that it is a " one wrench" job! Dead Link Removed Dead Link Removed
