I have a 94 Explorer auto trans, and the trans shift cable has come loose from the ball stud on the linkage right under the steering column. Since I live in the great salty state of Michigan, is is possible that if there was ever a metal clip on the end of this cable? It may very well have evaporated. There is a nylon socket on the end of the cable. Was there ever a metal clip there or what? Anybody know how this cable was initially secured to the ball stud? Thanks.

This happened to mine as well (before I swapped in the Manual)

I don't beleive there was ever a metal clip in there...just plastic. It either replace the part which is maybe two difficult to reach bolts, or get creative with some wire and/or zip ties.

fabricated repair part

I am not sure how long this fix will work, but here it is. I scrunched my arms down to the shifter and measured the ball stud at the thin part under the ball. I came up with 0.275 inch. I took a piece of .060" sheet steel and drilled a .275 hole in it. After cutting a slit from the end through the hole and I bending the piece into a U that was .550 inch between the legs, I used a screwdriver to open up the slit to the point that you could "snap" the drill bit into the hole by hand. After putting the end of the shift cable onto the ball stud and snapping the "U" over the ball stud and cable end, I used pliers to squeeze the legs on both sides of the split back together. It worked! I am not sure how long it will last; but I racked it from park to D1 back and forth a bunch of times and it is still holding. Car runs and shifts fine. I will try to post some photos on the list if I can figure out how.
