Today on my way to work in my '95 Explorer, I observed that the speedometer needle would drop to the bottom peg, the trans would downshift and the OD light would flash for a few seconds. All this having taken place at highway speeds. After that, the trans would upshift, the speedo would behave almost appropriately and the OD light would go out. The problem repeated itself several times during my 14 mile drive to work this afternoon. The problem got worse on my way home from work tonight. It refused to correct itself as well as it did on the way to work. I found myself limping along at an undetermined speed due to the speedo not working properly, in what seemed like second gear with the engine turning at around 3 grand. I really don't want to keep that up, so I slowed it to about 2500 rpm. Prior to this episode, the trans popped out of gear at slow speeds until the Ex warmed up a bit. The transmission's erratic operation definately corresponds to the speedo needle not registering and dropping to nothing. I've had difficulty with the speedo needle bouncing and not keeping an accurate account of the actual vehicle speed for a year or more, but today's episode was the worst I've experienced since the car was new.

'95 Explorer, 155000 miles. I bought the Explorer new in 1995. Trans was rebuilt at 135000 and I've had no trouble with it since the rebuild. The battery is the original, believe it or not. The battery's built in hydrometer (little green eye) has always been green. However, when I looked at it with a flashlight tonight and it appeared to have lost it's luster indicating that a new battery is on the shorter side of the horizon. I also anticipate that the Vehicle Speed Sensor **** the bed causing the erratic speed indication.

Any thoughts?

sounds like something is wrong with the vehicle speed sensor and without knowing the speed the transmission has no idea what to do

That corroborates my sentiment with exactly the same rationale. Thanks for the support!
