trans speed sensor vs vss? help!

2000 ranger 5.0
i have 1998 explorer 5.0 and 4r70w/np208f in my ranger i have a speed sensor on the side of my trans and one on my stock 8.8 rear and everything works fine now my question is im working on SAS right now full size dana 44 front and 9in rear and you cant put speed sensor on the 9in so what would happin if i left it out? i can live with no speedo and abs light on its just a trail truck its not a DD but i need to make sure the trans will shift right and the truck will run right anyone know?

That's the problem, your trans will shift funny. If you search vehicle speed sensor over on dezertrangers.com you'll find a few threads about this. The sensor is a magnet which reads the tone ring in your axle as a pulse signal and is sent to the computer.

One way some guys on dezertrangers.com fixed this is they had a tone ring cut out and welded it to the driveshaft at the output of the transmission. In your case it would be the transfercase. Then a bracket was made up to hold the sensor in place to read the tone ring.

If you have the speed sensor on the side of the trans then the sensor on your axle is probably just for ABS.
