I am now the proud (ish) owner of an xplorer. I say proud ish because i bought it without checking if the 4wd was working and the owner looked respectable and honest. Anyway the transfer box has packed up. Does anyone know where i can get 1 from or if anyone is breaking an xplorer. I got it because i wanted a reliable 4x4 as i have a baby one the way now i am faced with this problem.

Have a look on ebay they have some breakers on there from time to time.
Hope this helps Good luck

I Keep searching the internet and e-bay but now i know i need one the breakers are not advertising. but cheers for that bulldog.

It wasnt P970 DAV by any chance?
No it isnt, i got mine from shefield. The bloke only had it 5 months said he never checked the 4wd on it, cant remember the details of where he got it. I know what i should be doing now or where i should be going ;) when the mechanic was having a look at it he said the wires going to the motor on side of transfer box were all cut and taped together so it looks like they were joined and the tape was very clean and quite new. out of all those good xplorers out there and i have to buy a 3 leged donkey.

Are you sure it is the whole box that has gone or is it just the shift motor?
You can hear the motor click when you put into 4x4 so i take it that it must be the transfer box. Do clutches go it the transfer box or could it be that the box has seized if it has`nt had much use ?

Are you hearing a clicking when you're trying to shift it into 4wd or when you're driving it around. If it's clicking while you're driving around your t-case is more than likely shot. If you're hearing something when it's trying to shift it's probably the shift motor and it's a pretty easy fix and you don't need to replace the transfercase. If it turns out you need a new t-case look into getting a 1354 manual shift. It takes a little work to get them installed expecially if you have a full length console but they're much more reliable.

the clunk noise is when you engage 4wd and it does not nake any noise when you drive. is that what you think it might be the motor on the side of my transfer box. If so what might it be doing or even not doing ??
There is a metal tag number on the transfer case, which will tell you the exact part number you need to look for.

These guys might have got one that might fit (not sure what the shipping would cost though):

Ive seen that tag, ill write the numbers down and see if they match up.

Just phoned douglas valley breakers and they have not got any transfer boxes in for a xplorer, But it was worth a try (thanks)..
Ive had a look to see if my speedo is on the gearbox or transfer box and i carnt find it ! Is it a cable or wires ?? Ive found 2 wires going into my transfer box but not sure if its them or not. Ive looked on that diagram on this site and it does not look like that.

The 98's and later get the speed info from the rear abs sensor on the back axle. Its all electronic so no cable. You can take off the transfer motor and use grips to move the transfer box for test purposes. Also with the motor out you can see if it is moving with the switch. (remember to go to 4x4 low you must be in neutral and have your foot on the brake)

Well since the wires to the transfer case has been cut and taped up, I would get a voltmeter and test the famous "Brown wire" -- make sure there is a voltage jump when you switch the vehicle from AUTO to 4HI.

Cheers for that link Ive just e-mailed him :) . It says it is for a `97 will the transfer box fit mine if my speedo works of back axel and his would be from either the gearbox or transferbox !! If it works of the back axel does that mean i can fit bigger tyres and not have to alter the calibration, or am i not that lucky ?

I think you would be fine just no vss to hook up. As for bigger tyres, I founds that with the 255-70-16 tyres my speed was reading about 6% fast, when I changed to 265*75*16 the speed now reads almost spot on.
