I was underneath my 97 AWD today changing the upstream O2 and gave the undercarriage a quick lookover when i noticed some fluid around the outpout shaft of the transfer case, also noticed it on the bracket that comes down to the driver side of the transfer case. vehicle drives great and thats the only leak i can see with the whole car. output shaft seals in the AWD transfer cases known to leak? just wondering.

the more important question I have is a shudder ive been noticing when i am in high gears and driving at low speeds. to my knowledge the transmission fluid has never been changed in my vehicle with 134K miles, can old/worn fluid cause the torque converter to shudder during lock up/lock out?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok I am not sure but I own a 1997 explorer and have only had it for one year and 6 months now and already I have spent thousands on new torqe converter and transfer case! Not sure what is going on but I still do not have it back and I am wondering if you know if any connections to the problems. I had the torqe converter replaced at the dealership, then low and behold 6 months later the transfer case goes out and really want to blame the dealrship but not sure if that is possible.........let me know! Be carefull though I have spent lots on those problems please don't let it go!

im not having any shifting problems or transfer case problems. i only notice the shudder in the transmission when im in a high gear at a low speed, amost telling me that i need to downshift. so im not sure.

Most of the time, its the mechanical VSS sensor near the rear output flange (of the transfer case) that leaks, so check that first.
