Ok I am wanting to swap my push button case for a manual one. Choices as I see them are :
manual 1354, probably the cheapest and also weakest choice- but I havent broken the push button I have. Anyone have one? Know where to get one? Cost guesses.

Atlas II probably the most expensive but the strongest with the additional benefit of the 3.8 low, which with 4.10s would give me about a 100:1 ratio in low. This is the one I want. Question would be can I use the stock cross member?

What about a DANA 20 out of a EB? anyone make adapters to the A4LD? My guess is that this would eventually cost almost as much as the atlas!

I havent seen much in my searches about the Atlas- still two in explorers or do others have them now??

Just some questions and thoughts as I wait for my trans to be finished.

Contact Rick H. here on the web, about the Atlas II, here has one in his X.
I have one to install but I have to fabricate a mount anyway so I do not know about the mounting.

Also, contact Advanced Adapters (A/A), the supplier for the Atlas II and ask them. A/A is usually more than willing to assist; I know they helped me alot.

Good Luck, and think about the 4.3 low range.

AA

I got around to calling AA and I think this will be the next major mod for me. Pretty complete sans drivshafts, and the crossmember. Im going to do a 1" body lift first to get some additional room, per Ricks install article.

Price is decent, and with the 3.8 ratio I would get a crawl ratio around 100 to 1 with 4.10s and my auto trans.

Now if the market would cooperate and generate some cash for me Id be set!!!

Steve the Atlas Is a good Choice. I have a Manual Shift in My Navajo and it is Not as weak of a link as your Push Button. The only way to damage the Maunal 13-54 is if the Chain brakes in the T-case. With an Atlas you dont have a chain it is controlled by gears. Good Luck!!!

Kris, your right about the 1354 not being that weak, but one thing I dont like is the rear output. I would rather have the slip on the driveshaft than the trans.
I worry that overflexing it would pull it out, or if a u-joint goes I have to pull the shaft out etc. I plan to redo the rear suspension and I think in the long run a fixed output like on the Atlas would be the best.

Now if I could only earn the money as fast as I can talk about spending it!!! .

Steve, I am Not sure what you mean by this. The Atlas 2 will use your Stock drive shaft. The only Explorer that has the Slip on the tranny is a 2wd.

MY BAD!Thanks Kris

I had a brain fade- Ive been thinking the trans has a slip at the rear output ( my other truck does) but it does have a flange- Ive been assuming it was a slip- Why?? I have no Idea??
Thanks well I wont worry about the TC as much. I really dont know what I was thinking about( maybe that I changed the seal on the New Process case in my pickup)

Well the Atlas still has the better ratio, so...

Man I hate when this happens... getting old I guess.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but...

A4LD = 2.72 First gear ratio
Atlas "David" Transfer case = 3.8
Rear gears = 4.10

2.72*3.8*4.10 = 42.3776
Final crawl ratio = 42.3776

Sandy, I had heard that the auto transmission would be unable to brake with the 4.3 Atlas "Goliath" transfer case. Have you heard something different?

Torque converter

A4LD = 2.72 First gear ratio
Atlas "David" Transfer case = 3.8
Rear gears = 4.10

2.72*3.8*4.10 = 42.3776
Final crawl ratio = 42.3776

Torque converter- You need to multiply by 2.5 or so to factor in the torque converter. Also the first gear in the A4LD is 2.47 .

2.5*2.47*3.8*4.10=96.2

I could use the 4.3 I guess that would bring the low ratio up to 109:1, but I still think I would have concerns about overpowering my brakes with the torque multiplication from the torque converter- it could have more effective multiplication than 2.5:1 how high I dont know - maybe 5:1 or more. Just guesses

Oops, I was thinking 2.72, which is actually the low range on the borg warner. hmm, I forgot about the torque converter.
