Transfer case damper req'd on 96 AWD?

[TPL96]

I'm in the process of changing the transfer case fluid and noticed the damper is missing.

I purchased my 96 V-8 LTD AWD in 98 so I don't know if it should have the damper or not.

WOT from a standing stop produces vibration (shudder) in the drive train. I never did isolate the issue and have simply gotten use to it over the years.

Not sure if these items are related or not but any feedback would be helpful.

I'm thinking its probably there for a reason (like the "fifth" shock thing), but many of us have removed the dampener w/o problems.
