1997 EXPLORER XLT 4WD
I have a 1997 explorer 4.0 sohc automatic 4 door 4wd control trac question is
build date code M1662 BWA assembly code 4405-08 serial number 199000 ford part number F77A-GA OFF tag on transfer case was going to rebuild but took it apart it's in bad shape found a used F57A-GA but dont know what interchanges or if anything interchanges so any info would be greatly appreciated on interchange numbers or if i have to find identical to what i have

Not positive about this, but I think the F57 is the 95-96 version of the 4405 and the F77 is the 97 version of the 4405. I think that you need to check out the front output to see if it will work because the 97 has a CV front driveshaft and the 95-96 doesn't IIRC.

I know that other people have used the 98+ version in place of the 97, but the issue there is that the 98+ uses the ABS sensor on the rear axle for the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) but on the 97 the VSS is mounted in the Transfer Case. People have gotten around this by using the rear case from the 97 with the front case and guts of the 98+.
