Hello to the Explorer community. I love my 99 Explorer 4.0 auto (UK spec) but I have a problem. While idling at traffic lights I noticed the 4x4 high and low lights flashing on and off. This is gonna be bad I thought. I pulled up at the side of the road and looked underneath. I could see oil dripping from the centre of the car where the cross member is (transfer case?). I had to carry on to get home, but I found the drive was stuck in low. Before this I tried switching from high to low. I could hear the motor move but not the usual clunk you hear when it engages. Can anyone tell me what has happened? Before this the car was driving perfectly, with no noises or rattles etc. There has definately been a loss of oil, but why and where from?
Hope there is someone out there who has had a similar problem....Phill:confused:

You need to look for where the ATF is leaking. If it is where the rear driveshaft goes into the transfer case the case more than likely needs to be rebuilt.

transfer case

thanks, I found the easiest thing to do is replace the box with a second hand one. They are breaking lots of good explorers over here in the UK (what a waste!) Probably due to the high cost of fuel....Phill:salute:
