My Explorer needs a Transfer Case. I want to sell it but if we fix it first, the truck stays mine. Is a Transfer case the same for an automatic and a manual transmission?

What makes you think it needs a transfer case?

They RARELY go bad, like NEVER, so for some reason I doubt your problem lies in the T case.

No the transfer case is what makes a 4x4 different from a 2wd, so they are not the same by any means. The 2wd's have whats called a "dummy" case which is nothing more then a spacer.

I'm asking if an Automatic and Manual are different, not 2WD vs. 4WD. I lost my 5th speed a while back, and we thought it was the trans, but we heard that 5th gear is located in the Transfer case.

The 5th gear is not in the transfer case.

I'm assuiming your Sport is a 5 speed?
Sounds like you need a rebuilt tranny...

The manual T case and electric shift t case are a little differerent, they will not bolt up, if thats what you are asking. I mean lots of people ditch the electric shift in favor of a manual t case, but it requires cutting a hole in the floor for the shifter and removal of theold electric shift equipment.

The T case has no gears in it. Your overdrive is in the tranny, regardless of what tranny you have. Whoever told you that has no idea about these truck's....

Hope that helps!

Now you can do a search of these forums for "No 5th gear" and that will point you to your real problem.....

They are not the same. They DO go bad, mine somehow got a crack in it and it locked up and snapped the out put shaft. If yours is truely bad you should be able to get one from the junkyard for a couple hundred bucks or less.
