Transfer case shift motor 2004

I bought this 2004 sport trac to tow behind a motorhome. I had the eprom flashed to allow the transfer case to shift into the neutral position. The Ford tech said he is confident the flash worked correctly. When I could not get the TC to shift to neutral using the neutral sequence steps I took it back to the dealer who said the shift motor was bad and Ford no longer sold the replacement. I purchased one from Advance that was supposed to be an exact fit (which could be different from exact match?). Dealer put it on but was still not able to get it to shift to neutral. Dealer gave up. No charge. Now I have a truck with a TC that is stuck somewhere between 2X, 4lo or 4hi. I don't really know because the light no longer works but I do hear a clicking noise that sounds like a relay trying to work in the dash. So I don't know if anyone can help me with this but please try if you have any ideas. First I need to get the truck back to where it knows what position it is in. I don't know if the dealer knew to mark the motor position when he removed it but I hope that is not the problem. Is there a reposition instruction if the position is lost?

I just picked up an 05 sport trac and am experiencing the exact same thing. I am curious what your solution was?

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I had to stop working on the truck for a couple of months due to priorities. I am ready now to start working on it again. The first thing you are going to have to do is determine whether the transfer case motor will shift. If you hear a clicking in your dash area that will be the shift module. I had mine clicking constantly at one point and had to disconnect the negative battery cable to reset. If your dash lights are working to indicate 4x4, 2x2 or whatever then the shift motor should be working as the encoder in the shift motor is what tells the transfer case module what position it is in. Are you trying to set this up to be towed or are you just trying to get your transfer case to shift?
