Hi all, my truck is stuck in 4 wheel drive. It is a 98 Eddie Bauer 4.0 SOHC. It has the auto/4 high/4 low switch. I didn't put it in 4 wheel, it was on auto and has been stuck in 4 for a while now. Any suggestions before my truck explodes? Thanks guys

ok so no advice...i'm gonna take out the front drive shaft, take it for a spin, and if the problems seem to be gone, i will pick up a transfer case off craigslist and swap em out. If anybody has any comments or other advice, any input it appreciated.

Its likely your transfer case shift motor. It has a small plastic grommet that deteriorates over times and result in the motor getting lost and not knowing where it is. You can fix it by taking it apart and replacing the busted plastic with a but of rubber vacuum tubing. Good luck. If you've got more Q's , feel free to ask.

First thing disconnect the battery for a few minutes. Shift motor does not engage 4WD, it is controlled by the computer energizing an electromagnetic clutch pack. Shift motor is for shifting ranges. You may end up needing to check the wiring & sensors in the case. You may have a seized clutch pack.

My transfer case will stay in 4Low sometimes, I crawl underneath the truck and tap on the electric motor with a hammer. Hitting it with a hammer bumps the brushes in the motor, which sometimes loose contact and will cause the motor to not work. Its the easiest solution to get you out of 4wd. Thats the best case scenario.
