Hi All! (97.5 sohc sport) Finally dropped my used up transfer case & put in my other used up transfer case. Thanks for the info, Brooklyn!! Well, I knew this one wasn't good either but still better than what I had. This one wouldn't go into 4 low. I swaped & retimed shift motors & now it does go into 4 Lo. Very low budget car here. Drove it for 2 miles last night & I think the shift motor on the transfer case slipped out of position & I lost all gears with a loud buzz.
Son about had a cow LOL!! This car has been a nightmare. I put it in 4 Lo & got back home. Today everything works again but I think I'll pull the shift motor & recheck what I can. I know this case is almost used up too but it is nessessary to use for now.
Now for my question: I know the transfer case is worn but, if it keeps jumping out of gear can I put the transfer case in 4 Hi & cut a wire @ the motor & just do without 4 Lo untill I can afford the 3rd transfer case.
If the transfer case is forcing the motor out of position maybe I can jam a screw into the shift motor gear to hold it securely. I desperately need this car just to be a little dependable for another few months.
In the past few months I have had several big failures, chain guides, valve body gskt, now transfer case. The kids driving me nuts without his car & I'm running out of parts. Please help!!!! Mike Phelps ROCKS!! Go USA!

When it started buzzing/grinding, were you going in reverse, or coasting down? If so, then you're right: That case is shot too. It's the shift rail bore issue, and it's even worse than your original one was. Nothing you can do to the shift motor will have any effect on it. It needs to be rebuilt with the upgraded shift rail bores and/or new case halves.

Sorry.
