does anyone have details on how to change the fluid on a transfer case, including what fluid to use in it?

You took the words right outta my mouth!
Specifically for a 98 A4WD (4.0 SOHC).

Your owners manual should tell you what kind and how much. My 96 takes just under 2 qts of Mercon V transmission fluid. There should be a drain plug and a fill plug on the rear of the transfercase. You'll need some way of squirting the new fluid in because of the angle.

I use one of those hand pump oil cans to fill. I can unscrew the nozel and it pumps a lot faster. Takes about 6 fills but it goes fast. Squeeze bottles don't work very well. Just need a 3/8 inch socket wrench and extension to do it.
