Does anyone know of a manual system to replace the electric/vacum setup for the transfer case. Seems I my low range selector doesn't always engage the transfer. Also looking for a driver door panel for a 93, 2 door, tan interior and a temperature guage (stock unit for the dash) ford wants too much for a new one. Any help would be most appreciated...see ya in the mud!

Hi ammo troop, and welcome to the site.
The pre 95's could be bought with a manual transfercase, but it might be hard to find one. Check the local salvage yards. There is another option and that is the Atlas II tranfercase. They are not cheap($2300.00) but you can get a lower lo gear and they are gear driven, not chain driven like the OEM T-cases. I have a Atlas II with a 3.78:1 low in it. They also come with 4.2 and a 3.07. Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply, But I want to keep present case, looking for a manual engaging system to replace the electric/vacum engaging system. Has anyone had the check engine light come on and the reading indicated an open loop something to do with temperature? mines a 93 with headers,K&N filter and a hyperchip would a broken temp guage (not sending unit) have anything do with this? It runs fine otherwards (a little rich)any help out there???/ thanks to all

Your explorer does not have vacuum engauged 4wd. It is all mechanical, driven by a small gear motor onthe transfer case. Your automatic hubs are the same, wether on manual shift or elect shift system. You probly just need a new gear motor or 4wd computer. Both are common to go bad with extreem use (lots of water driving or such) I personnaly had to replace a gear motor in my 4x4, it would work sparaticly, after I changed it, all was fine for years.

The 95+ have vaccum activated hubs (pig) and electric driven gear motor on the mechanical transfer case.

I do have the linkage assembly and transfer case to convert your BorgWarner 1351 transfer case to 1350. You will need to change transfer cases and install the shift linkage. Its fairly easy, no cutting required. My last conversion, there is a pan attached to the floor covering where the shifter would come through. Just pull your carpet back, remove the screws and pull the pan off. Then swap t-cases (about 1 hour work) attach the linkage assy and put the other plate down. I have all this stuff except the OEM plastic trim that goes around the boot.

[Thanks for the info]Be looking into the elec motor payday. Any advice on the engine light prob?

no, my 95 is pretty much stock. I have several transfer cases, both flavors, electric and manual. I also have lots of other Exploder and Ranger 4x4 parts and pieces.

Lo range shifting

Ammo,
I too have a (choke) electric Tcase. Two things come to my mind. I have found that I get the most trouble getting into Lo range when there is a "load" on the drive line. I personnaly find this quite often because I have a Detroit Locker in the rear. They seem to hold a load on the drive shaft for a while. So if you are on a slight uphill, try moving fwd or backwards a little to ease up on the drive line. The best way I have found to get into Lo range is to put my transmission into Reverse and it goes everytime. If the motor was bad, you wouldn't hear a clicking noise over your left shoulder when it is trying to activate. As for the check engine light, I would say take out your chip and try it again. I don't have a chip yet (Christmas?) but my buddies with Exploders and chips say they have to remove the chip to get an accurate reading.

Jeff,
You have the conversion parts to get manual shifting? I'm interested!!! I would love to shift like a real 4X4 and have a Neutral position. A few Questions for you. Looking over the specs of the two Tcases, I have found the output shafts are different. Are the internals different? Would I have a Neutral position with the converted Tcase? I do know that I cannot just swap the cases because I do not want to change drive shafts, besides I like the CV joint that the auto comes with. I would really apreciate any and all info that you have about the cases. Anyway, I hope any of this helps Ammo.

Sending Unit

Troop,

Your sending unit may be good, but the wire leading from it may be bad. I your gauge is not working, try grounding out the wire the guage should go all the way over. If the wire is not reading ohms, then your computer is not reading either which will make the engine run real rich, thus o2's read rich, MPG sucks, and CEL comes on. My wire was bad and did not read properly, but it is a pain trying to get to the wire to put on a new end. Try taking a probe and sticking it in the wire farther up line and ground it out and see if the guage works, I bet you that you will find that it pegs out, which means the wire is broken close to the plug on the sending unit.

Hope this helps,

Don

jeff do you have

any manual hubs to go along with that manual t case im interested in the t case and might be able to pick it up and definately interested in the hubs if you have them
what other parts do you have?

Thanks....

Appreciate all the advice, just tried a new ECT sensor last night with no luck,,going after the wire tonight. Thanks for the advice on the transfer case shifting. AMMO TROOP
