Transfer case

Transfer case, help please

I have a weird grinding noise that occurs at various speeds in my x, right under my feet. I can get it to make the noise by accelerating or braking but its only intermittent and wont always happen. I thought it was the bearings; but my off road shop said it may be the transfer case. They suggested I take it to the dealer, it has the auto setting for 4 wheel drive so they didnt want to mess with it. Its off to the dealer tomorrow and im totally worried about what ther going to say, like: "no warranty for you sucker". Any one had this problem? Any suggestions? I have the trail master 4" on my 2000 sport 2dr manual trany with 4.10 gears and 33's.

Hey Yeti, I have a '98 sport with the same lift and 33' Mickey Thompson tires. I also have the same promlem. Although I dont have an answer to your problem I can tell you that its not the front driveshaft because my noise is still there after the front driveshaft decided to take a crap in Attica. When you find out what it is please post.

well glad to hearr im not the only one, I was startin to get worried. The dealer checked it out said they were unsure of the problem but they would look into it with greater detail next week , its gotta go back for a new power door lock.

What is the Outcome

I have a whirring / grinding noise on my 95 Exp 4x4 and the little shop I take ot to said it may be the input bearing on the T-case.

I then took it to Ford and they said they couldn't isolate the noise and there was no noise from the T-case. THey said it was tire noise and said I should buy new tires as they are about shot anyway.

I would be livid if my T-case decides to vomit up all over the road...

Let me know what the outcome was, that would be great!!

I would say if your tires are about shot anyway and you need new tires, I would start there. If you need them, you need them. If the noise is still there after the tires, then keep looking. Another thing to try would be to put the vehicle up on a lift and running it at speed and see if the noise is still there. If it is, then that would eliminate the tires.

well this saturday she is going back to ford, Ford told me that it would be straight time booked to me cause of the modified suspension. Is this normal? I thought they would at least have to find the problem before they started billing me. Should I go somewhere else?

Ford will always charge you for the time they spend finding the problem. If they spend a half a day taking your front end apart but still can't find the problem, be prepared to pay several hundred $ for nothing.
