OK,
I was reading all the posts on this subject and I still did not get a straight answer...
I want to drain the ATF from the converter in my 2004 Explorer AWD
In my F150 there is a rubber plug that allows access to the converter drain plug. Not in my explorer.
Can I disconnect the oil cooler hose and crank the engine so it pumps out the old ATF ?
I am dropping the pan to replace the filter.
I have about 13qts that is what the manual says it takes to fill the tranny.
Do I fill it up in intervals thru the inner drain plug ? Crank shift fill more ?
Can someone advise ?
I believe my transmission has a filler plug on its side above the exhaust, but as usual it is kind of unacceptable.
Any tips ?
Thanks.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

You've actually asked two questions:

1 - Can I use the trans pump to move fluid?

Yes, sort of. The trans genuises have gone round and round on this. Pro says sure, no worries AS LONG AS you don't run out of fluid. Con says, the risk of running out belies whatever advantage you might get running that pump.

2 - can I use the pump to drain the converter?

Best I can tell, no. Just guessing. I have, like you read quite a bit. I've never read anywhere that someone has dumped the converter successfully this way. All I see are where they dump as much as they can, refill, and then later, dump again. Seems a bit wasteful to me.

wished I could actually be helpful here.

Transmission refill/drain

I totally agree with you , total waste.
I will replace the filter tomorrow, I do have a home made pump.
I bought a bug spray tank at Lowe's , best refil pump I ever seen ,
I refilled the truck's read end and the transfer case
I just wish there was a way to dump the old ATF. :(
