Hello!

I just acquired a 97 Ford explore limited 4.0 V6 with control Trac four-wheel-drive. It has 124000 Original kilometers. I brought it to my mechanic to have it looked over, specifically because the transmission is shifting rough between gears two and three, and also shifting rough when it is down gearing as I come to a stop. All of the 4 Wheel Dr. modes work very well.

My mechanic has recommended a transmission fluid flush and also that adjustments be made to the transmission bands from a local transmission repair specialist.

Wondering if “band adjustments “is a different way of saying “rebuild the transmission? “

Anyone else had experience with this? What was involved and how much could I expect to pay?

Thanks for any insight you have!

There are adjuster studs on the outside of the transmission. These adjust the preload on the bands. They’re held in place by nuts that lock the stud in position.

They’re supposed to be adjusted somewhat regularly, although I’d say that most people never do.

It can’t hurt to try.

band adjustment does not equal a rebuild. a flush could be good, but on these older trans usually a flush machine can be quite aggressive, so many choose to do a flush in the way that its drain and refill a few times
