Transmission fluid capacity

This is somewhat related, so i won't start a new post. When i was under the truck tonight double checking the pan for leaks i noticed that the seal between the transfer case and front driveshaft is leaking. The seal between the front axle and driveshaft was replaced a little while ago. I have looked at the haynes manual when i dropped the front one to do the trans filter, and it suggests that you undo the four bolts that connect the shaft to the transfer case.

I am just trying to work out whether i should do this my self or whether it would be easier to just outsource it. The fluid for the transfer box over here when i have changed it in the past is about 25.00 pounds, 50.00 dollars.

How hard is replacing this seal, drop the skip plate, undo 4 bolts, and then......

If I did it myself it would save 1-2 hours labour.

The fluid for the TC is the same Mercon V, about $4-5 per quart here, and it should take about two quarts or so. That seal on the front of the TC/driveshaft will I believe require the case to come apart. I don't know about that, someone else here should know.

The haynes manual suggests on later models that the transfer case has to be removed to change the front seal, but seemingly not the rear. I don't have the transmission jack, so it would definately have to be outsourced somewhere if this is the case.

To quality leak, it is slighly damp around the around and on the frame. Not dripping, etc. Could it be left and topped up every couple of months, i don't think it is losing that much if any really.

Snake oil, that stop leak crap, any good? I used some when the front axle prop shalf was leaking, big waste of money.

4/5$, lol. Mercon V is 20$ over here from ford.

Yes, if the leak is very minimal, leave it and keep good maintenance on the TC. You could try the same kind of trans seal additive in the TC, but not much, the volume is less then 20% of a full transmission.

What would it cost to buy/import a supply of the best trans fluid, like Amsoil synthetic? If the shipping wasn't bad, that would be an excellent incentive to invest in the synthetics. Those can save you some fuel also with the price of fuel so high now. I think the price through our distributors would be under $8 per quart, many members here buy Amsoil. Good luck,

Shipping is the problem, fluid is quite heavy, so the shipping would just be crazy. If you could put it in a car that someone is shipping that might work, or if someone had a container coming over, etc.

Does anyone know the exact procedure for changing the front seal? If i buy some snake oil how much should i add to the overall amount of TC fluid. I think the TC holds 1.4 litres. I will not be able to find any stop leak that is suitable for use with mercon V, so there isn't really any point in putting that in over normal mercon. If mercon V were used would that make the leak worse, as semi-syn, etc.

Well the Mercon is now obsolete, no one is allowed to manufacture it since July 1. Thus Mercon V is now the standard fluid needed where Mercon was. You can still use the cheaper fluid, but the better fluid is better for the reliability and performance. For what fuel costs now changing to the best synthetics is almost a savings after a certain number of miles/kilometers.

I wonder if you can find a reasonable way to ship the fluids over there. With the savings from buying it at our prices, the extra shipping cost may not be as bad over all.

The stop leak stuff that i am thinking about trying is 325 ml. So should i just put the whole lot in along with 1.075L of mercon/mercon v or put less of the stop leak in and more mercon/mercon v? The transfer case capacity being 1.4litres. Iam thinking about using this stuff,

I am still debating whether to bother with the stop leak stuff or just keep topping up every so often. I suppose for the low cost of the stop leak and fluid it might be worth a shot. It is a shame the transfer case has to be removed from the vehicle to do the seal. What would the labour time be approaching to drop the transfer case and do the seal? I assume ford does sell the seal?

Add the additive to the transfer case first, then top it off with the Mercon V. It will run back out when it is full(top fill hole). The transfer cases aren't usually too much trouble, the hard part is holding them back up and lining up the dowels. It's best to have two people to do R&R it. Good luck,
