Transmission Fluid Change Problem

I'm working on my buddy's '02 explorer 4x4 V6. We just got done doing the timing chain tensioners and took it for a drive. The transmission was acting funny so I thought I would check the fluid level since we lost some from the cooler when we pulled it.

So with the tranny cold I undid the T-30 screw and fluid started pouring out. After about a quart came out I stuck the plug back in it and came here.

If I was low on fluid I would have thought only a bit would have come out. Do I have a different way of checking/adding the fluid with this transmission, or is my drain plug bad or something?

Has anybody else had this issue? Please help!

Oh, I forgot to add, this truck is sitting in my garage, so the vehicle is as level as its going to get.

Note to self, start engine before getting under car, reguardless of hot exhaust.

Apparently the tranny sucks up about a gallon of fluid when it is running and dumps it back into the pan when it stops.
