Has anyone devised a way to flush their transmission themselves? I thought of getting an inexpensive RV pump and use that to pump the tranny fluid thru.

Thoughts?

I talked with a Jiffy Lube manager a while back; he said that if you disconnect the lower tranny cooler fitting it will pump the fluid out. you add more fluid to keep the level up and eventually it will flush itself clean. The trick is to make a fitting you can attach a hose to and pump it into some container that you can measure the amount of fluid going out and add new fluid at the same time through the dipstick tube. He didn't say anything about the upper connection so if any of you have had experience with doing this please respond.

I have done that when I changed a buddy of mine's F250 tranny fluid but we worried whether we were doing some damage running it w/o fluid for that short time...several times as it took a number of cycles to go through 16 qts.

I've done it about like you described. I don't pump until the pump runs dry, though. Just pump "some" out (I usually would do ~1 qt at a time) and replace it. If you don't run the pump dry, it shouldn't hurt anything.

MrShorty is right, pump out 1 qt at a time, then shut down; add 1 qt of new;
then repeat until what's coming out is clean looking;
it might take many many quarts.

I have used a similar method... works great.

I disconnected the “to transmission” hose from my remote filter housing. I plugged and clamped the disconnected line and added and hose clamped a 6 ft length of 3/8” line to the housing. The other end went into a calibrated water jug ( 1 gal size ).

We used 15 quarts of Mobil 1 ATF.

Even though this ATF ( Mobil 1 ) has about 40 k miles on it, it still looked remarkably good, slightly darker in color.

After the flush/fill was completed, I added a new K & N filter to the housing and reattached the hoses.

The procedure took my son and I about 20 minutes to complete. There was no mess since we were well prepared for the flush; nary a drop was spilled.
This procedure is so simple that I can hardly believe that I used to pay Jiffy Lube to do it.

I am not so much worried about the pump as I am to the fact that you are running the transmission without lubrication.

The transmission will hold a couple extra quarts easily over full. Nothing to worry about with the engine at idle. Then just pump out three and stop. I think I remember seeing a Ford procedure that said to add 7 quarts and then pump out.
