Transmission HELP

So, a few weeks ago I made a long road trip. While on the road I noticed my transmission skipping while I was at high speeds, 80mph plus. I haven't noticed anything at lower speeds. I also notice, while speed control was set, that the transmission would skip while climbing a hill. Yesterday I put my truck in reverse, and accelerated, and it was skipping in reverse. Don't know if the reverse is related or not, have been told that is normal. Oh, btw, it is an 02 explorer xlt 4x4 with 125,000 miles. Bought it used and don't know the maintenance background. Should I have fluid flushed? Do I need to have trans rebuilt? Need some direction if anyone can advise.

Sounds like it could be a engine miss and not the transmission. Have someone scan the computer and see if you have any codes.

Do you mean "slipping" instead of "skipping"? When a transmission "slips" in gear, you'll hear the engine rpm's shoot up suddenly and the tranny isn't moving the vehicle until the gears re-engage again, if they ever do. Just a guess here, but since this happened while you were doing 80 MPH, maybe your older transmission was getting a little "overheated inside" at that high speed and this caused some slippage to occur? Might explain why it happened going up the hill as well, the hill adds extra strain on a transmission.

Don't know anything about the skipping or slipping in reverse problem you have other than any transmission slippage is "not normal".

With 125,000 miles on it it wouldn't hurt changing the fluid and filter, might buy you some time and much cheaper of the two choices, but don't waste your money on that till you get it properly checked out just in case you really do need a rebuilt one installed. Good luck.

Absolutely. The same thing happened to mine when I hit 100,000 miles. Is it almost like a sputter as your going up hill? If so you just need a tune up... Plugs, wires, PCV valve, fluids, filters, etc.

Thanks for the input. I will be doing a complete tune up soon, after I thought about it and looked at the wires I realized I didn't do the tune up after I bought the truck. I added a bottle of lucas injector cleaner, and that alone actually helped a bit.
