Transmission identification

Trying to figure which transmission my Explorer has. I'm guessing 4R55E or 5R55E. How do I tell and does it really matter when I go to change the fluid and replace the filter?

Welcome to this forum! There is a sticky thread at the top of this section which has this information. The 4.0L would have a 5R55E.

Any auto parts store should have a filter/gasket kit.
