Transmission issues. Need advice!

Indeed... I need to get the vehicle down there...

yeah for sure. another thing to consider is that the lurching could be your rear diff going bad. have you have any issues with the pinion like the hum?

what kind of hum are you talking about. Mine has a deep humming sound that sort of resembles the type of hum that all terrain tires make. it sounds like it is coming from the front. just to make sure it wasnt my tires i just rotated them to see if the sound moved to the back but it didn't. I am not really sure where it is coming from but it has been doing it for a while.

Hmmm well the hum that Im talking about (in my rig at least) is coming from the rear diff. If you think yours is coming from the front you should have that checked out. But since the engine compartment is in the front too it could be harder to pin point. Does your hum get worse when you hit between 40-60 mph? Or can you hear it at all times?

Not that I notice... had the differential serviced about 4 months ago as well...

If it's from the front it might be a wheel bearing, does it go away when you accelerate? if so then it's probably one of the diff bearings on it's way out. It will last for awhile but you will need to replace the diff with a rebuilt one, or get yours rebuilt you can probably get a diff bearing kit for around $150 or so it's the labor involved that cost allot of money.

im actually getting my rear diff rebuilt by a guy the old man knows for $585. look around at different places for a rebuild on one of those you never know you may find a good price :)

UPDATE!!
for those that are interested that is. Got my explorer back from AAMCO today and they fixed the rough shifting. shifts smooth and like a dream as it should. they found that the issue was in the valve body which they had to replace and the shift solenoid was acting up. replaced that as well. its all good now! thanks for all the replies folks

Ok, so I just bought a 2004 EB and it is doing exactly what was described in the beginning of this thread. 2nd to 3rd is rough and it bangs when I put it in reverse. Does this mean I need to have the entire system replaced or should I Just focus on the valve body and the shift solenoid? Can you even have these two items replaced without taking the whole unit out?

Sorry, I'm extremely new to all of this.

Not a problem don't be sorry at all. There are a lot of reasons why you could be having the rough shift. Mine just happened to be the valve body and the shift solenoid. It could be that a band needs to be adjusted, you don't have enough transmission fluid, or a number of other things. Not sure about the shift solenoid but I believe the valve body can be replaced without taking the entire tranny out. But if I were you I would take your truck to a auto parts store or some mom and pop tranny place and have them read your error codes if any. Are you having other issues other than what you described? any slipping at all? or flares or hesitation between shifts
