2002 FORD EXPLORER XLT
Hello everybody, I have recently owned a Ford Explorer 2002 V6 4.0L engine with Odo reading of 223000 km. I love this truck and I think it needs a lot of maintenance. I am very happy that I found this forum that might help me along the way..... Firstly with my transmission performance, hope that somebody can start me with this....

Welcome, describe the issues you are having with the trans.

I have 5R55W transmission gearbox and I have noticed that when I shift to forward and reverse, it seems to have like a jerky motion of shifting the gears. Is it normal? Also, at time when I stopped in a hilly road and then drive forward, there is some sort of a shifting delay that I was moving backward before it gets to gear forward. Any suggestion please..

Hilly-road = slope = fluid shifted in oil pan to front or rear. Check fluid level. Remove tiny plug, bottom of transmission oil pan, engine running, if no fluid presents, level is low. Add fluid. Try again. imp

Hi there, I need some help, originally mechanic was supposed to fix my transmission for $1300 and guaranteed it for a year. Well it's been just over a month now and every time I contact the mechanic he's dodgy and says it will be ready by the weekend. Still haven't received the vehicle. He claims there's other isssues (starter/solenoid). He didn't quote me on these new issues and I haven't signed anything from day one. I gave him until the end of the week to finish the job or I am showing up with a flat bed and taking the som'***** back. I guess I just need to know what I am liable to pay him and if I'm technically allowed to just show up and take it to another shop.I haven't signed anything but I did leave him with a $500 deposit when I dropped the car off.

Dude, you need to start your own post, rather than mess up the original poster's thread! I would delete your two postings on this thread and start your own thread.

Hi imp, the level is really a bit low and I topped it up. Now, I can see the improved on hillly road. The shifting mechanisms has still a jerky movement on the gears when you drive it forward or backward. Is it normal?

I am afraid I cannot really say for certain. Jerky when the shifts occur, or jerky when first manually moving lever from N to D or R? No shifting is done in reverse, there is only one gear ratio. imp

Yes, it jerks when first manually moving lever from R to D but this is obviously noticeable like a little banging on the gearbox compare to my other 4x4.

Is any unusual noise present? This is beginning to sound like a loose condition somewhere in the driveline. Possibly U-Joint or C-V Joint on front driveshaft . imp

I have checked the U-joint at the rear differential is okay but I noticed on the front diff has play on its gears when you try to rotate the driveshaft.

If it were me, I would remove the front driveshaft and see if any change is present in the effects you are feeling. imp
