I have a 03 XLT 4.6 with 80k mile on it.
On cold start sometimes transmission does not engage in properly and acts like it is on neutral for a couple of seconds even when it is on reverse or first gear. First it moves (as normally it would) and stops (as if it is on nuetral) and then starts moving again. I do not have any problem while driving on the road though.
I got the tranmission fluid and filter changed 2 weeks ago but it didn't solve the problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Sounds like its the begining of the end. You are about to join the Grenaded Explorer Tranmisision Club. Don't be afraid. Its ok we can help you through this.

Was reading about the transmission problems online earlier today after posting the message and found out some experts are recommending replacing the transmission solenoid.
What do you all think?

You could look at the neutral shift cable. It is held on my a metal plate with a plastic gromet which break often. If it's not perfectly in place it causes low end shifting probelsm, or no shifts at all.
