My 92 Explorer is acting up. The transmission has been working OK. However this weekend the transmission started acting up with an intermittant problem of not engaging in any gear, D OD, R, etc. Put it in park and try it again and it will shift into gears correctly. Put it back in park and it will not engage again. It is the original trans with 176K miles. The fluid was changed 50K ago. Any ideas what it might be. Thanks

1st thing is to check the fluid level.

on our 92 explorer we had,,, it did the same thing,,, the tranny was gone,,, hope thats not the road your going down,,, :( to much money

Have heard of a couple cases where the internal link that moves the manual valve falls off.

I had checked the fluid level and it was fine. It didn't smell burned but was somewhat dark. The shop checked the linkage and said it was OK, looks like its gone ($1,700 for the rebuild). Too much money to put into it I'm guessing.
