02 mercury mountaineer
I have a 02 mercury mountaineer 4.0 auto awd. It shifts smooth and perfect through all gears. No noise or hard shifting at all. But if I don't let it run and warm up. It slips starting out in drive and reverse. It's like I don't even have it in gear. I idle it up then it will start to go. But no noise or hard shift. Would this be a band need tighten , solenoid or sensor ? Or whatever you would think. Please let me know some ideas it will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

How many miles? AWD? 4WD? 2WD? Have you ever changed fluid and filter in the trans?

190000 miles awd. Yes have changed fluilds and filter

This might sound crazy, but by any chance did you remove the front drive shaft? If that is removed in an AWD it can drift in park.
To me it sounds like the trans filter and oil should be changed. When it warms up it gets thinner and slows it to start flowing.
With the miles on it there could be other problems, but if it was me I would change the fluid and filter. Just my opinion.

Not crazy at all.....
Really I wouldn't of thought having front drive shaft out would make it do that. You are right when I bought it he had front drive shaft off. I putting it back in. he said transfer case was bad and gave me another one to put in it. I dont feel or see anything wrong with it. Was going to put shaft back in and see. O he told me that he just got trans filter changed...I will change fluid and filter.. Thank you I really appreciate the input.

Well you still might have problem with the transfer case. People take the front drive shaft out because the viscous coupling goes bad and starts to wear front tires and causes other driving problems. With awd cars all 4 tires have to be the same.

He got it when it had 70000 miles on it and said this will be the second transfer case put in BUT said first one went out because front tires was bout half tread and back were new. I don't have a lot of experience with all wheel drive. I've had enough 4x4 . Guess will go through transfer case when always on.

Well I hope you can work out your problems.
