I have a 2001 Expolorer Sport and I simply love my truck. The problem is my transmission is screwing up. It's extremely hesitant sometimes to go into a gear. Sometimes you can go all the way to 4k+ rpm before it will drop fully into the gear (usually second to third gear.) Sometimes if I just let off the gas and get back on it, it will go the rest of the way into gear, but not always. I just had my mechanic guy replace the transmission fluid/filter and all that and it had no effect.
On top of that, more and more often I am getting the OD/Off light flashing and the gears are just off by 1. Instead of going into first gear it starts in second gear etc untill I put it in park, turn it off, then back on and presto, back to norm for a month or 2. I think this is a speed sensor problem but I dont want to fix it untill I figuer out what path I am going to take.
So I am considering my options.
1) I can have my mechanic rebuild the transmission (not sure on price yet.)
2) I can buy a rebuilt automatic transmission with a 3 year unlimited miles warrenty for $970.
3) I can buy the manual transmission for $940 + the clutch kit and all that. I just dont know how much of a pain this is going to be. I am sure it's possible. Has anyone here done it? (I am sure that was a dumb question considering present company
)
This is the first automatic transmission I have ever owned and I must say I am pretty disappointed with it. The only reason I went with it in the first place was it was a 5 speed auto and everyone swore it was no diff than a manual. I was planning on getting a performance tune that would change the shift points to something more reasonable, but I dont know anyone that has done it to ask about it.
I think option 1 is going to be the cheapest. Option 3 would be the one I like the most if I can get it done for under $2500. Ya'll think it would be worth it? I am not a street racer or any of that, but this automatic is driving me crazy! The only thing I have done to this explorer is new HT tires, K&N cold air intake, and pulstar plugs (those are expensive but more power and 4MPG is worth it!)
So what do you think? What would you choose?
